The Archive Remembers: The Daily Northwestern Receipts
I spent my college years in the late 1990s, back when Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and even smartphones were nowhere to be found.
So naturally, I assumed I was safe.
Clearly, I was not.
During my conversation with Northwestern University archivist Charla Wilson for the Black Experience at Northwestern University Oral History Project, Charla came through with something I wasn't quite prepared for:
the receipts.
Article after article from The Daily Northwestern documenting pieces of my college experience, namely pieces discussing my career as a student-athlete on the NU Women's Soccer team which I joined only a year after the program began.
Seeing them again, decades later, makes me think about something much bigger than my own college nostalgia:
What happens when our everyday experiences become part of the historical record?
We often think of archives as places where important history is preserved. But sometimes history is being created in much more ordinary ways...in student newspapers, photographs, programs, interviews, campus publications, and the stories people tell about their lives.
At the time, I wasn't thinking about any of that.
I was just living.
Now, decades later, those moments offer another way to look back, not only at who I was, but at the communities, institutions, relationships, and experiences that helped shape who I became.
And apparently, the Daily Northwestern was taking notes.

Why the archive matters
These articles are more than old newspaper clippings. They are pieces of a record—a record of what was happening on campus, what students were doing, what stories were considered newsworthy, and how people like me were represented during that particular moment in Northwestern's history.
And that's part of what Charla Wilson and I explored in our conversation about Living Legacies, Lineage, and Lessons.
